• You can visit your pharmacist and ask for Plan B emergency contraceptive within 24 hours of unprotected sex. This type of contraception requires you to be of certain age and this will be verified by the pharmacist before selling. The sooner the better when you want to take such an emergency contraceptive for preventing pregnancy.
• You can take emergency contraceptive within 72 hours of unprotected sex. These have the effect of blocking implantation of fertilised egg, preventing ovulation or creating obstacles in the fertilisation process of the egg. Emergency hormonal contraceptives can be taken on any day without any regards for your menstrual cycle.
• Side effects of the emergency pills are not serious if not made a habit. Always bear in mind that emergency pills are not the norm. These pills have been found to cause nausea and vomiting in some women. Your doctor might give you medication for nausea along with the emergency contraceptive pill. You will also notice tenderness in breasts and your menstrual cycle would be disrupted after taking the pills.
• IUD or Intra uterine device can also prevent pregnancy in an emergency of unprotected sex. A copper IUD can be used for preventing pregnancy if it is done within 5 days. It has the lowest failure rate of all contraceptives. The success rate is 99 percent. An IUD blocks the process of fertilised egg’s implantation to the wall of the uterus. This is not a short-term option as the IUD can provide long-term solution for preventing pregnancy. A flip side of using this method is that you run the risk of contracting pelvic inflammatory disease.
