Mass. Sex Education Site Revamped After Complaints About Abortion Content

In March, about 20 state lawmakers and antiabortion-rights advocates denounced the site for including statements such as that abortion is "safe and effective" and "much easier than it sounds." Critics said the site downplayed the seriousness of abortion, failed to cite potential risks and encouraged teens to bypass the state's parental consent law. However, reproductive rights and sexual health advocates said the site, which was produced by the e with a $100,000 state Department of Public Health grant, presented medically accurate information.

DPH Commissioner John Auerbach said, "We needed to pull back a little bit, and add a more cautious and medically accurate tone." The new site still discusses teen pregnancy, abortion and sexual health information but in a manner that "isn't emotionally charged or doesn't underestimate the seriousness of the decisions," Auerbach explained, adding, "It will address some of the concerns we heard." The site recommends that teens approach their doctors if they are afraid to ask their parents about pregnancy and abortion, and it uses different language to describe the procedure, according
