Sex Education in India

Sex education in India has been given relatively more importance in the recent times. Several debates are prevalent regarding what should be appropriately taught and syllabised in schools and homes. Even State Education ministers across India have received the proposition of educating children on sex with scepticism.

Our leaders and educationists need to realise the importance of sex education in India. Unanswered questions and doubt in terms of sex related issues can prove dangerous. Children take recourse to experiments amongst themselves and also seek advice from unregistered websites resulting in , miscarriages, sexual harassments and molestation. The government needs to know that the answer does not lie in ignoring the crisis. India records the highest number of rape cases according to recent surveys. This problem needs to be nipped in the bud. Instances of conformist parents, stringent religious rules trying to control the piousness of girls work on the assumption of a kind of moral policing. This propaganda comes with a reverse psychology that makes sexual encounters more precarious. Children tend to research further that they might otherwise avoid. There are several instances where the conformist attitude of parents, their reservations about sex education and a generally insensitive attitude towards the importance of proves fatal.

Educating teenagers about sex does not mean a deliberate challenging of tradition and culture. Sex education is all about creating awareness which will help children cope with the changing times. The increase in the spread of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) such as AIDS needs to be dealt with a lot of sensitivity amongst the youngsters. Adolescents within the age group of 15 to 20 have been considered to be experimental in nature resulting in child pregnancies, fungal infections or STDs. This is because their indulgence is based on ignorance.

The most recent statistical data reveal that around 4 to 5 million people are diagnosed with AIDS or are tested HIV positive every year out of which only 0.5 percent of people are able to return to a normal way of life. This depends on early detection of the disease and timely precaution.. Governments have been struggling to redeem people from the clutches of AIDS and other STDs which destroy their immune system and corrupt the bodily functions rapidly, leading to death. NALCO is one such agency that has been consistently trying to make progress in this field.

Sex education therefore holds importance because knowledge helps in spreading awareness amongst the ignorant. Holding sessions in classrooms and discussing the cons of e would help in curbing the spread of STDs. Sex education, in a nutshell, involves a lecture followed by a session of discussion that addresses the queries of the audience. Videos and posters along with the knowledge of qualified professional teachers can make sex education in India a success and help in spreading information. One must understand that comes with responsibility.
