Sunbathing Improves Sperm Quality

Man taking a sunbathUnlike essential vitamins that can be obtained from food, vitamin D is synthesised in the skin when exposed to the sun. And, now if the findings of a new research are to be believed, sunbathing can improve quality of sperms in men.

This research was conducted in University of Copenhagen. For the study, researchers initially tested sperm quality of near about 340 men and after examining levels of vitamin D in the blood they came to a conclusion that almost half of them had insufficient sperm count, that is, below 50 nmol / l. And, the reason as stated was lack of exposure to sunlight.

Also it was noted that acrosome reaction – a chemical process – needed to fertilise the eggs was hindered due to low levels of vitamin D.

Published in the journal, Human Reproduction, the study supports previous research in which sperm production was associated with vitamin D. This research was conducted at the Medical University of Graz in Austria. They too drove to a conclusion that vitamin D boosts sex drive in men by increasing their testosterone levels

According to the study, sperms race towards the egg with a much greater speed and become more penetrative.

In fact it is believed that such a study will help in drawing out a conclusion as to why couples conceive on holiday.
